PADI OWSI day 5

it was the final day today!!  and i am writing this up after a few beers at swashbucklers to celebrate …

we had academic presentations first thing this morning and then a big day of theory and course presentations from our course director pete.
my presentation this morning was from the Adventures in Diving course – Boat Diver.  seasickness of all things!  how to prevent it and how to help it if you do get it.  finding a piece of equipment to promote the ownership of and finding a Continuing Education course was pretty challenging but i got through it and was really really happy with the results.

we have to sit our five dive theory exams this week .. but the great news is … alex and i both have our paper work signed off and we have petes blessing to carry on and so we are now going to be sitting the Instructor Exam next weekend!!

ah huh ... oh shit!

PADI OWSI days 3 and 4

yesterday was another full day in the classroom and we presented our prescriptive teaching academic sessions.
we used the Rescue Diver course for material and it took a little more thought than preparing for an Open Water session but in a good way.  when you are teaching rescue, you can use real diving stories and get a bit more nitty gritty than you can with perhaps an open water group.

i was pleased with my presentation – each time i complete a session i am picking up points from the previous session and i think i have finally nailed the contact and value and application sections which all head up the introduction, body and summary.
the ownership of equipment section was way too weak though.  that part just slipped past me whilst i was doing the presentation so will fix that for next time.  i’d like to blame it on the heat in the classroom and the lack of air circulating around … but its just better preparation and more knowledge of the courses on my part.
andrew decided to do an iceblock run in the afternoon – pineapple fruju’s!  BRILLIANT.

today we spent quite a bit of the day in the lake for our final open water session presentations.
my two skills to present were hovering and BCD removal and replacement at the surface.
we dropped down to the bottom of the buoy and went through alex’s first lot of skills.  she did a great job, and then i completed my hover skill requirement which went well.   we popped back to the line for an ascent.  this is where it gets a little scary – scotty had a bit of a problem when he went to ascend.  alex and pete were above us so i just sat on the line and watched him.  we came up slowly, really really slowly.  he’s all good though – he needs to get a bit of a checkup done before he does his Exam – but better safe than sorry!

so scotty jumps out of the water and we cruise back to the buoy and down to complete alexs next round of skills and my final one.
then its time for a spot of lunch before we crack into the Adventures in Diving session planning workshop – and the dive we are going to do is Underwater Navigation.  which is sweet – its one of the specialties i want to be trained up to teach as soon as possible.

tomorrow is our last day and i have my academic presentation all wrapped up and ready to go.
am feeling really positive about this one!
